The two drying units of the family Visch

The family Visch, in ’t Harde in the centre of The Netherlands, has a poultry farm with 125,000 commercial layers. Besides that, they cultivate 65 ha. of agricultural farmland.
In 2001 the family decided to rearrange the treatment and offset of the manure. The main reason for this decision, were the very high costs of the manure offset. Besides that, dry manure is also easier to transport, compared to wet manure. In the old situation the manure was collected in a manure pit, which always resulted in a large part of sediment.

Mr Visch does the daily work together with his son, who will also continue the farm in the near future.

The two houses with commercial layers are build next to each other. In one house there are 75,000 birds and the manure is pre dried and in the other house there are 50,000 birds without pre drying. In order to get a good and equal result, the manure of both houses is transported equally onto the drying unit, which results in a mixed manure of a constant texture.  The drying units are built in between the two houses. The manure is dried up to a dry matter of 85%. For the ventilation no extra adjustments where needed. In the two houses cross ventilation is used to ventilate the houses, which can be used straight away for the drying units.

Each morning the manure belts are switched on by the computer. This is done before 6 o’clock for 30 minutes. This way the cost for power are reduced, because at that time of day a different rate for power is charged. The overall operational costs of manure offset are reduced with 65% thanks to the investment in this system! Before 2001 the costs for wet manure where about € 90,000.- a year and now with the dry manure this has been reduced to € 15,000.-!
