First aviary Comfort 3 breeder house
The family company van Haeren in Wehl in The Netherlands is producing for many years now with the
reliable Comfort 3 system of Jansen Poultry Equipment. In 1973 the family had also made a switch from commercial cages to broiler breeders. This made them the first farm with the new Comfort 3 system in The Netherlands. Delivery took place in the summertime and the construction was done by Mr. van Haeren himself. Because it was the first of its kind there were some starting problems. But the assistance and service of Jansen was absolutely perfect. There are many advantages to the system. By increasing the surface the bird density can increase. In 1993 the family also traded the pig rights for poultry rights and so more birds could be kept. The pre and after drying of manure results in an enormous reduction of the tons manure that has to be removed. Especially in those days were the costs for manure removal. It was very high and so this made a good difference in the costs. The climate is also benefited very much which is a big advantage for the birds.
It is no a system that reduces labor. It’s more like you move your activities. Rolls and belts have to maintained properly to be sure of continuity. In this house you also have to fight red mite actively.
This flock started with high % of floor eggs. Mr. van Haeren is not sure how come, maybe because he has a new breed. By acting immediately the % is now down below the 2%. The production results are much better compared to the hand collected nests. This you see best during peak production. The family still has two houses with hand collected nests. They had to be replaced already but because the bird flu struck the region they had to pros pone the plans. The quality of the eggs is absolutely perfect compared to the hand collected nest boxes.
